Booking a groom and not sure what proof to bring? Here's what most groomers ask for, how PetSmart and Petco compare, and why the rabies tag on the collar won't get you in.
Updated October 2026
Most groomers require only a current rabies vaccine for pets over about 16 weeks, given at least 24 hours before the appointment, with vet-issued proof (not just the tag). Some groomers and cities also require Bordetella and DHPP.
For most groomers, rabies is the only required vaccine — usually for pets over 16 weeks. Some independent groomers, and some cities and states, also ask for Bordetella (kennel cough) and DHPP because dogs share space. Call ahead: every salon sets its own policy.

Both big chains say a tag on the collar doesn't count as proof. They need the record or certificate from the vet — it shows the date, the vaccine and when it expires. A photo or PDF on your phone usually works if it's the vet's document.
PetTally stores every vaccine with dates and certificates, reminds you before anything expires, and shares a QR Pet Passport. Free on iPhone.
