Found a dog with a rabies tag — or need your own dog's rabies record? The tag number is the key, but there's no single website for it. Here's the real process.

There's no national rabies tag database. Call the vet clinic or animal services printed on the tag and give them the number — they can contact the owner or reissue the certificate. Some states and cities also have online tag lookups.
There's no national public rabies tag database in the US. Each tag is issued by a vet clinic or a city/county, and the tag number links to that issuer's records. So "looking up" a tag means contacting whoever issued it:
Rabies tags usually show the tag number, the year, and the issuing clinic or city/county with a phone number.
They match the number to their records. If you found a lost pet, they'll contact the owner — owner details are kept private.
Some places have one — for example, Tennessee offers a statewide rabies tag lookup that tells you the issuing county, and some cities (such as Columbus, Ohio) have online license-tag searches. Search "[your county] rabies tag lookup".
Use the tag number to find the clinic that vaccinated your dog, then ask them to email or reissue the certificate. Groomers, kennels and landlords want the certificate — the tag alone usually isn't accepted. See how to get lost vaccine records back.
Many clinics follow a recommended yearly rotation of tag colors and shapes so animal control can tell at a glance whether a tag is current — for example, orange in 2026. Your area may use different colors.
PetTally stores the certificate, tag number and every vaccine, with a reminder before rabies is due. Free on iPhone.
Get PetTally FreeSometimes. There's no national database, but some states and cities offer online lookups (Tennessee has a statewide one). Otherwise, call the clinic or animal services printed on the tag and give them the number.
Call the clinic or animal control listed on the tag with the tag number — they'll contact the owner. Also have the dog scanned for a microchip at any vet or shelter.
Not usually. Groomers, boarders and landlords typically require the rabies certificate from the vet. PetSmart and Petco explicitly don't accept a tag alone.
Yes. The tag number tells you which clinic or county issued it; contact them and ask for a copy of the certificate.
